Success Traits of an Online Entrepreneur

Of course, any list like this is subjective, but the items below are common traits among those who find a high level of success online.
  1. Focused and Goal Driven

A lot of people keep busy but aren't moving forward. Unless your "busy-ness" is taking you forward toward your end goals, you may be pushing what you want away from you rather than drawing it toward you.

The reason many folks don't reach the large goals they set for themselves is that they don't map out the small, daily steps that will take them there. Rather than following a map, they end up on dead ends and detours. High achievers sets small goals for each day that move them methodically toward their ultimate goal.

  1. Decisiveness
Many "newbies" to business are too afraid of making mistakes. They are indecisive at best, and some are almost paralyzed by the fear of failure. They often won't make the simplest of decisions without looking for someone to tell them what to do. If you've spent much time on business forums you know this is true.

This retards their progress and potential.

Successful entrepreneurs are decision makers. They are problem solvers. They are risk takers (calculated risks—not rash, impetuous risks). Rather than waiting for someone to tell them what to do next at every turn, an entrepreneur is proactive and researches the problem and possible solutions—and then makes a decision.

The biggest mistake newbies make is failing to take sustained action! If you're waiting, you're not doing. If you're not doing, your business isn't being built. If you're not building your business, what are you doing?

  1. Can-do Mindset
Those who fear failure have a diminished chance of creating significant success. For those with low self-esteem, failures are painful and are to be avoided. This prevents them from taking the kind of calculated risks that drive a business to success.

If your mind is in the wrong place about failure, failure is statement about your character and abilities. If your mind is in the right place, a failure is a learning experience, not a personal statement.

Failures are the learning bridges we must cross to reach the success that lies on the other side.

It could be said that the faster you fail the sooner you'll get ahead. Entrepreneurs believe in their dreams and don't allow obstacles to defeat them.

  1. Cool Under Fire
No matter how good you are at what you do, you will be criticized. Some criticisms will have merit, but many will not. The successful entrepreneur needs to be able to handle all criticism with poise and confidence.

Imagine yourself above the fray looking down at it as though it were someone else being criticized instead of you. From this lofty perspective you can respond intelligently rather than react emotionally.

  1. Self-motivated
Self-motivation and enthusiasm are key elements to entrepreneurial success. Internet marketers like to tout the "Internet lifestyle" in their sales copy, trying to make people believe this business is easy.

I can guarantee that if they are successful, they worked a lot harder than they let on to get to the point where their lifestyle is better than the average 9-5 worker. Chances are they worked 60-80 hours a week, including weekends and nights, to become successful. Without self-motivation they'd never make it big.

They may indeed only work a few hours a week now, but few become financially independent by working a light schedule.

  1. Adaptability
Change is the only real constant in this online world of ours. Internet entrepreneurs need to be ready and willing to adapt to changing ideas, consumer habits, social environment, and an ever-evolving online landscape.

If we don't change and evolve, if we stop learning, we will inevitably be left behind.

  1. Imagination and Creativity
It takes imagination to find consumer needs you can fill and creativity to stand apart from those already filling those needs. This is the essence of building a successful online business—finding a need and putting your product or service in front of those who have that need.

That doesn't mean you have to be the next awe-inspiring visionary (but maybe you could be). Those folks are few and far between. It doesn't even take an above average amount of creativity to find success. You just have to be willing to "put yourself out there" with what you have. You will connect with some, but not with others. That's true no matter how brilliant or dull a person may be.

  1. Perseverance
Getting started is hard. You'll do a lot of work before any positive results start trickling in. At times it may not seem worth it. Entrepreneurs have staying power, though. They persevere through external and internal hard times (an internal hard time is self-doubt and self-criticism).
  1. Communication Skills
A successful entrepreneur has to be able to communicate his vision. You needn't be the greatest writer or speaker in the world. It's more important to be genuine.

If being a "wordsmith" isn't your strong suit, don't worry—enthusiasm and sincerity are great substitutes. In fact, an unwavering, genuine enthusiasm will often win more allies and customers than thousands of fancy words.

Simple words are often far more effective than highfalutin words.

The most important thing is effectively communicate your ideas, no matter how simple your language. In fact, simple is often far more effective. Lofty language can leave others behind. When I wrote text books I was told to write to an eighth grade reading level—for college students. Simple communication skills are all that is needed for most markets.
