The HTML Tag Explained
Browser Support
The <html> tag identifies the programming language of a document to the browser so it can display it properly.
A web page only needs four elements in order to be displayed properly. These tags are the bare minimum:
<html>
<head>
<title>Your Page Title</title>
</head>
<body>
Your web page content...
</body>
</html>
The HTML element is the root element of a web page, but that can be a little misleading. The document's DOCTYPE declaration must be placed before the opening HTML tag to be valid. A web page will display without including a DOCTYPE, but it won't validate without one. Based on your interest in this tutorial you might also be interested in:
