Deprecated HTML Tags

A deprecated HTML tag is one that has been designated to become obsolete at a future date.

You should avoid using any deprecated HTML tags as they will eventually lose browser support. Once that happens your web pages will render differently. The results of that will be unpredictable at best, but could be quite ugly or even make your page unusable.

Here is a list of deprecated HTML tags:

  • <applet> [use <object> instead]
  • <basefont> [use CSS instead]
  • <center> [use CSS instead]
  • <dir> [use <ul> instead]
  • <font> [use CSS instead]
  • <isindex> [use <input> instead]
  • <menu> [use <ul> instead]
  • <s> [use CSS instead]
  • <strike> [use CSS instead]
  • <u> [use CSS instead]
  • <xmp> [use CSS instead]
If you're not familiar with using CSS to replace the deprecated elements you might want to read my Intro to CSS.
