You may have noticed some hosts that are well known for being low cost are not included here. I intentionally left out hosts that I know from personal experience provide inferior service—being an affordable (cheap!) host is one thing, being a b-a-d host is another.

While the odds of hooking up with a bad host may increase the cheaper the prices are, that doesn't mean all cheap hosting plans are of poor quality.

To help ensure a cheap host isn't also a poor host, call tech support to see how fast you get through. It's not unusual to be hold for 10-15 minutes, but anything over a half hour could be a bad sign.

To be fair though, if it's a host you otherwise like the looks of, try calling again another day. Things do sometimes happen outside of the norm, even to the best of hosts, that temporarily stress the support department.

Calling another day may find the problems resolved and services more like normal. However, if getting through remains difficult, take it as a sign to look elsewhere.

A lot of hosts fold in the first year or so. A host that has been around longer than that has probably got it figured out. I always check the date the company was founded. If it hasn't been around at least two years, I look elsewhere. I was with a host once that closed the doors without warning, it's a pain in the . . . neck!

Even with cheap hosting, price should not be the only consideration. The difference in price from $4.00 a month to $5.00 a month is only $12.00 a year.

While it may seem like paying a year or two in advance many seem like a lot, at $4.00 a month that's only $48.00 for a full year, and $5.00 a month is only $60.00. If you check the terms of service, many hosts offer a pro-rated refund, so you can get your money back for any unused service if you grow dissatisfied with them.

Even most cheap hosting providers offer a 30-day money back guarantee. Some offer 60-day or 90-day guarantee. If it isn't working for you, you can ask for a full refund during that time. A 60-90 day guarantee is a pretty good sign they're confident in their abilities to satisfy your hosting expectations.

Another indication a cheap host can be dependable is to look for a testimonials page. If there are a lot of testimonials it's a good sign. If they're aren't many, or any at all, it isn't necessarily a bad sign though. The host may be lax at adding them, or simply may not use customer tesitmonials.
